Writing

If the writer believes that our life is and will remain essentially mysterious, . . . then what he sees on the surface will be of interest to him only as he can go through it into an experience of mystery itself.

Background

I remember reading through the Bible as a young boy and being nonplussed when I reached the various genealogies of the Old Testament. But my late father encouraged me to consider what they were communicating about the nature and identity of the people whom God calls to Himself. Because of that moment and others like it, I have since been on a lifelong journey of studying Scripture, particularly Old Testament theology and hermeneutics.

Perhaps because of this early emphasis on authorial intent and early role models in reading and writing, I have found profound joy in the writing and editing processes and the opportunities that they present to serve other creatives. By taking a message that has captured their heart and forming it in a way that it can engage a larger community I can shepherd the conversation and invite others into something significant. This pairs well with my naturally analytical mind and enjoyment of philosophy in providing a framework to artistry that enables it to be shared and utilized creatively.

The four areas that we feel the Lord has placed especially upon our family's heart are prayer, ministry to children and youth, international ministry, and the written word. These callings have guided our previous pursuits and continue to inform every new chapter of these values. I write to creatively communicate the themes, structures, message, and beauty of the Bible to a new generation of Christ followers across the globe. Whether writing articles, interviews, or reviews for an international organization or taking an extended absence to enable our family to become more involved with our local church, I write to bring truth and beauty together in a way that arrests the heart and mind.
